B20b racing ?
“This is my car”
having a non-vtec Head makes me feel as if I won’t be able to compete with my other friends with vtec motors... I feel like I’m missing out on something... I’m a noob to the Honda game and all... but I just want to hear it from others if I really do need vtec on my build? My friends got me into the scene and I’m really loving it.. just completed my first auto to manual swap with help from my friends. They keep telling to go vtec as if I need it.. will it really help me gain more Power ? Right now I’m having fun with my stock b20b with a gsr transmission it feels great. Are their any Honda guys out there ? That has a non-vtec build and still kick ***? By the way my friends always spank my *** in racing.. I’m not that good at racing yet but I’m sure I can get better overtime. I would also like to know any tips in shifting gears? I know how to launch and shift gears on the go.. I really don’t understand how to bang gears correctly... but yeah peace out have a nice day or night love y’all!
It’s your car, your motor. Remember that. Bet your friends have more bolt ons than you. So of course they’re gonna hop off the line a lil quicker. Driving skills come to play as well, but with experience will that come.
Just enjoy the setup you have now, cause I promise you when you do you’re gonna want a lot more power. That’s when you should boost it, then think about swapping a VTEC head.
Why tear apart a good running motor, that you guys just swapped in? For like what maybe 20-25hp, with a good tune.

Where are you racing?
What is your ultimate goal with the car?
Being able to beat your friends in a stop light race is not a good reason to build a car. Think about what you want out of it for yourself. Just remember, with more power comes more responsibility. The car will be harder to control on the street, maintenance will be more expensive, things will break more often. It may actually become less "fun" to own overall.
That said, do some browsing on what different power levels would be like in your chassis. There are tons of build threads, youtube videos etc. that you can find with an EG having 200, 300, 400 or more horsepower. Then decide what amount is right for you and your budget, then plan your build up from there.
Good luck

Depends how much you willing to spend too. B20vtec will cost a good bit, you have to change to high comp pistons to get the benefit of the vtec head, arp rod bolts, vtec oil feed line, 96+ oil pump, water pump etc etc.... a lot of sh*t to change over if you goin to do it the right way or.....
just boost it slap a small turbo on low pounds and call it a day. I wouldn’t boost high cause of the thin cylinder walls will crack on a b20.

Do not oversimplify it to make it sound like you can bolt an ebay kit on with "low psi" and it will be good. Will be a waste of money and end up with a blown motor.
Only AFTER you have decided what your goals are, and if you need turbo to reach them, then build a proper kit and do it right. It will be more work and more maintenance long term to go turbo correctly than it would to do a B20vtec, but the gains could make it worthwhile if you are shooting for bigger numbers.

OP check threads on h-t or google for setups and what it takes to make your power goal, whether it be b20v or boosted both will take a good bit of money to make them reliable. Just remember whatever major mods you doin like piston swap or power adder you need a good tuning system for it to be reliable.

Yes I didn’t mean for it to sound like it’s as easy as slapping a turbo on and be done with even though that’s what I made it sounded like lol. I just got tired of typing and didn’t want to go into details.

I’m ok with money I’ll just buy the parts when I can. I’m not in a rush at all, after spending around 5k for doing the auto to manual swap it was all worth it. But yes I think I’m gonna go with b20 with a b16 head after all. My friends brother is gonna sell me a b16 head for 400$.
And yes I will be rebuilding the block first due to many forums saying it will not be able to hand high rpm and I don’t want to risk blowing my motor. I was thinking of putting turbo but I was told it’s kinda of irritating to maintain so ima hold off on turbo for now. And as for power I’m looking to get atleast 300 at the least or 400 at the most.. and my bros got connections with a dude that tunes so I shouldn’t be to worry about tuning I’ll just let them handle it. I’d like to thank all of you for the input and opinions it was helpful!

yeah....figures... b20b high compression can get you so far. If you want it high revving like a type r you'll have to rebuild it properly and only then would a vtec head be worth it. After that a b16 transmission will give you some good pulls too, even w/o a vtec head. But the limiting factor is the rev limit of the b20.
