Had this happen to me last winter. You can take the drive shaft (pilot shaft) off and just have front wheel drive until you get a new one. I ordered one online I think it was about $300 to the door. When I did it I cut the shaft down to a nub so you can bolt the yolk back up to it so the mating surface does not corrode.

When you get around to putting a new shaft on you might want to think about changing the "differential" fluid. I forget what they call it. It is very dependant on the fluid being in tip top shape to activate the all wheel drive.

Thanks, just spent a couple hours removing the connection of the shaft to the front and the whole thing came out. I didn’t bother removing the rear bolts since it was already broken off. I already changed the rear differential fluid last summer so I think it should be fine.

The crappy part with these drive shafts is they have non serviceable u joints that are staked in so you can't replace a u joint for $15 when they start to go. I think doorman or someone makes an after market shaft that does have serviceable joints but it is a little pricey.

which would be a better option? OEM used, or brand new aftermarket? the car has 111k miles on it but it is getting old so i don’t want to spend too much for a brand new oem drive shaft

i'd go oem used ! everything oem seems always more reliable than aftermarket, same goes for cv axles

I guess I do a cost benefit analysis first. My 02 has 270,000 miles on it so it is hard to justify the super high cost of somethings oem. Also I would only buy a used drive shaft if I could replace the u joints which honda made that pretty much impossible on these vehicles. I tried and ruined a bunch of tools attempting to remove the u joint. The failure point is the u joint so buy used you are just buying a high mileage u joint.
