Default random low idle stall in 2001 Honda crv

I have a 2001 Honda crv that has been stalling very randomly at low idle. Today it stalled at highway speed for the first time. I tried starting while coasting and it backfired pretty loud and blew a big hole in the top of my muffler. I am wondering if a restriction in my muffler could have been causing the random low idle cutout problem I have been having? We have an old muffler which probably should have been replaced earlier. New distributor and one year old or so catalytic converter. My muffler guy said probably other issues due to backfire. But it only back fired once and that was the first time it stalled at highway speed. Could a restricted muffler cause low idle issues? Couldn't it have backfired because I was trying to start it while coasting sending fuel to restricted and hot muffler? This car was running great at all speeds other than occasionally stalling at low idle. Thanks in advance for any input
