Valve cover removal for timing belt job
Hi guys,
BACKGROUND: In doing a timing belt replacement, it is necessary to remove the valve cover to get to the upper
timing belt cover and cam gear. Currently, I am experiencing ZERO oil leaks w/ this 96 Civic DX w/ 113K miles (I am original owner).
QUESTION: I was planning on replacing the valve cover gasket and valve cover bolt grommets but as there are no leaks
in this particular system (or anywhere), can I bypass changing the spark plug seals?
Also, in the installation vids I've watched, NO ONE to a one has suggested using a drip of motor oil to get the valve cover bolt
grommet over the lip on the bolt. Surely this is a viable technique given the environment to which the grommet is exposed constantly.

i concur, ive pulled the valve cover quite a few times for maint, inspections, etc and have been fine with reusing the vc gasket, once it leaks i’ll replce it. But those spark plug grommets are annoying and if they leak AT ALL swap them, cuz oil in the tubes isnt good for anyone.

Can you use oil to lubricate rubber? Yes lol.
Grommets are your choice. They are a pain. If you skip them you need to check your plug wires after a week or two
