Default red hot catalytic convertor, smoking

finally figured out the problem with my friends uncles 88 civic dx hatchback - it was the igniter, and we replaced it today. car started, and after about 5 minutes of running, the catalytic convertor started smoking from the inside of the cat, and it smelled nasty, worse than rubber. the cat had also turned red-hot like the exhaust fumes werent going through the cat.

anyone have any idea what this could be?

It is most likely clogged. I wouldn't run the car until you fix it, you might f*&k it up.

It probly just did tho. Wait for it to cool take it ff. Put on end in a garbage bag and take a poll inthe other end and hammer out all the insides. Then put it back on. Start it up should be fine then go get a high flow cat this week

Just be careful if you're running the car like that... I was running mine hot hot hot one night last august. (100-110mph highway runs for almost 40 mins) I pulled off the ramp, and stopped at a light... my car was idling all fucked up. I tried to pull it ahead, it died... I tried to restart it... it started smoking...

Long story short it became so hot my undercoating caught fire, and set most of my engine bay on fire.

Almost lost the whole car, but thankfully it was just a bunch of wiring and vacuum lines, brake lines, fuel lines (cringe), etc etc...
