I have a 96 civic dx that the horn stopped working. I'm not getting any power at the horn plug. I've checked the 15amp fused and it's good. Even tried another one as well. I don't hear the relay click when I press the horn. So I bought a new relay and it does the same thing. I took the air bag out to look at the connections and don't see anything weird. I'm not sure where to go from here on testing.
I don't know which plugs on the relay I need to test. I did put my volt meter into each of the 4 and tried to test but I got nothing. So not sure if I even tested it correctly.
First check the brake lights since they are on the same circuit. If you find the brake lights don't work either, the fuse for the brake lights and the horn is under the hood.
To check for power to the relay, hold the - voltmeter probe on a ground then test for voltage with the + probe to all the terminals of the relay.
The horn button and the clock spring can be bypassed by jumping the horn wire to ground on the stationary side of the clock spring. The horn should sound.
The brake lights work whether the relay is in or out. I guess there's a chance I have the wrong relay however, I was going based off the attached picture.
I took my multimeter and probed each wire on the connector with the other end on a ground. None of them produced voltage when I hit the horn or pressed the brakes.
I took the airbag out and put a wire into the green wire coming in for the horn. Then ran that wire directly to the negative terminal on the battery and the horn didn't sound. I touched it to the positive as well and same results.
So I got a test light and I do have power at 2 of the bottom terminals on the relay plug. After that I'm not sure where to go to check. I don't get anything at the horn plug.
I think there’s a plug near the right (passenger) strut tower that supplies a connection to the horn, fans, a/c stuff. You might can try to find a diagram for that.
Edit: Also, have you tried a jumper wire in the relay socket? If that works, either your clock spring has a problem or the relay could be faulty.
Sorry I'm an idiot when it comes to wiring. Which wires would I need to run it to on the relay socket and then run them directly to the horn? I can't seem to find a good wiring diagram for a 96.
I was finally able to test this out. So when I jumped it the horn sounded just fine. So since I've replaced the relay already there must be an issue from the steering wheel to the relay.
Yep, now you can try to rig up your test light in the other 2 terminals and press the horn switches. If your light illuminates, that’ll tell you about that circuit. A buddy to press the switches while you hold the test light in place can help.
