Hello everyone I have a 99 ex coupe with a 00 b20 , I ran it catless for a good three-four months, Someone warned me I’d burn some valves. Anyways, As I was changing my Header gasket I noticed cylinder 1 having alot of carb around it? Im assuming I have to replace my head gasket as well since It smells funky around the head/ exhaust manifold gaskets area while its on. Would I need a rebuilt head?
^This. Are all 9 of your exhaust manifold studs present when everything is assembled?
yes all 9 bolts are on , Once I started the car I smelled burnt again like how I was smelling with the exhaust manifold gasket but that’s all replaced now. I didn’t change the head gasket when I did the swap so could it be it going bad now ? Also I need to fix my temp gauge sending unit cause right now it doesnt work and my fan switch was broken so im replacing that also
A) are you sure you fixed your exhaust leak? Did you check to see if the header was warped or cracked?
Are there any other exhaust leaks?
B) Are you or have you overheated the car ?
I didnt see if it was warped but it had a small crack on cylinder 4, No it hasn’t overheated before Its drove fine no issues for about 8 months but I cant see where my temp is right now till I fix my temp gauge sending unit. Are head gaskets like that ? Its blown huh since its metal then goes to the blck material?Thats the reason im starting to smell a lil funky scent ?sorry Im new to all this and still learning
A "burnt smell" is not a good way to diagnose a blown head gasket. The best way is a compression test and a leak down test. You can also look for signs of oil and coolant mixing, but a lack of this doesn't rule out a blown head gasket. The black soot all around the #1 exhaust port is from a poor exhaust manifold seal. The only "black" I can see in what you have circled looks like the Viton coating on the top layer of the steel head gasket.
Is the car smoking out of the exhaust?
Does the car have a catalytic converter?
You need to get the fans working before you start driving this. The sending unit for the gauge isn't going to keep the car from running or make it run poorly, but I recommend getting it fixed quickly also.

Replaced my fan switch sensor ,The car does have the cat still and No it hasn’t smoked and Alright I will rent the tool and do a compression test.
