I have a 2005 Civic 4dr with 123k KM on it. Never had the timing belt done.

Should I use OEM or are jobber brands ok?

 

Dont cheap out on this, stick with OEM

 

OEM, AISIN or Gates kit is what I would use.

Don't delay replacement of timing belt as you are overdue. 7 years or 168K kms whichever comes first. A broken timing belt can ruin your engine.
Consider replacing the water pump, tensioner and pulley, cam and crank seals, the 2 accessory belts, thermostat and flush coolant at the same time while in there.

 

Bought a Gates on Amazon for around $14 for my 2004 civic ex sedan. The original belt that came off of it was a Gates brand, but it also had Honda printed on it. T312 was the part number. Others in the reviews said it fit their 05 civics. Just put your car info in to see if it fits.

 

The car was driven from its place of purchase to my home where it will sit until my buddy is ready to replace the belt in a few weeks. I cant believe how great the condition the car is for an 05. I dont want to chance blowing the engine driving it until then lol.


I watched some videos on the replacement and its within my ability but I do not own a hoist so Id rather have my coworker who knows hondas and has a hoist do it for beer money price.

 

Yeah bro don't sleep on then timing belt as you can see from my car, lol my gf's ex brother in Law kept saying he was going to change it way before I even met my gf but never did. And honestly you dont need the hoist.

 

A genuine Honda timing belt, cam seal and front main seal can be purchased for less than $50... IMHO, "cheaper" aftermarket alternatives are not going to save anyone enough money to risk lower quality. The OEM tensioner can be found in the aftermarket for much less (I believe it is a Koyo or NSK IIRC) and there are proven choices with respect to the water pump.

 

ok, so the videos i watched guys were using snipes to remove the crank bolt, will an impact work? The reason im going with a coworker who has a hoist is because I dont want to run into a situation where something cant be removed and i get pissed off and my driveway is now blocked.

im a mechanic by trade on heavy equipment, and my coworker is ex honda mechanic, figured it would be less frustrating to have him take care of it...


btw the belt hasnt been done yet, slammed with snow, and getting married soon!
