No lifters

Use engine stethoscope to pinpoint noise.

You are correct that there are no lifters. These engines are OHC so they do not have lifters or rods that require valve lash. But you could have said that they do have valve tappets can and do make noise if the they are out of adjustment (kind of like valve lash).

OP, is the noise coming from the head or the block, only when it's warm or all the time?

and why 10w40?

Understood, but seemed premature prior to knowing location of noise source.

10w40 is a heavy oil, not ideal for your application. it is possible the previous owner was using to mask oil consumption issues, quiet a knock, or both. if it is knocking, don't ignore it... stop driving it. like now.
