Default Ek H22 shifter Going South!

Just this past weekend I was out cruizing.....a Z28 rolled by and gave it some throttle.....I was interested (knowing that I wouldnt win, but curious how good I could hang) So I drop down to 2nd at about 45-50mph and we both hit it. As redline came up I went to switch....but thats the weird thing......I pushed it into 3rd...and all it did was slighty grind, but not engage. I was like WTF!!!

I couldnt get it back into gear so I pulled into a parking lot. I popped the hood and check to see what was up.......and couldnt see anything. I later managed to get it into 2nd gear...and then to 4th....so I drove it home in 2nd & 4th. When I got home I looked at my shifter cables & moved them around some...and the problem seemed to have went away. Later that night (saturday) not even driving hard it did the same thing.

My shifter feels like one of the cables is draging on something, and when I go to shift it doent go all the way into gear (as if the cable is loose from the tranny) but they arent. Then somtimes it will stick in gear and I have to pull to get it out. I thought it was the cables at first, but I am chasing this crap all over the car.

Anybody have this prob.?

I have since driven the car 30-40 miles...and the tranny really seems fine.....I really think its either the shifter plate, or the cables....(If I shift really slow it works good.....but If I try and shift fast it wont engage)

Edit: Also it will shift into 2&4 pretty good, but 1st, 3rd, & 5th are all mushy (feels like it isnt clicking into gear)

Thanks,Mark

My friend had a simliar problem in his prelude, and he had to get his syncros changed out. I'm not too sure how to check that, but someone here should know.

Make sure to check all ur little metal clips that hold the brass rings on the linkage in place. Make sure they are there and that the cable itself isnt moving. Also look under the car and see if the linkage has gotton hot and maybe worn through, or the metal cable is frayed at all. One other thing is that there could be a kink in the cable close to the shifter itself. All these lines are is braided cable so they can have some problems sometime. I would just replace the cables with some new ones all together.. Good luck

Yeah....I looked at the cables....and checking for the clips on the tranny/shifter were my first instinct...but there is nothing on the outside of the cables that shows any wear.....but a place in town has a few sets of used cables....so I'm gonna go pick some up...

Thanks

i know with those clips that hold the cables to the shifter.. if they are slipping at all it wont go into 1 3 or 5...
