‘99 hatch with unknown condition D16Y7
Yesterday I bought an EK hatch (dx). The seller and I weren’t able to communicate very well but he said something (listening with my best Spanglish ear) to the effect of it “needs a new block” or similar. I assume from that the engine is blown but not sure in what manner. The starter and distributor are missing as well as the spark plugs. Car has 110k miles total on it.
Is there any reason I should try to make this engine complete so I can see what’s up? Or just find another engine and replace it complete? I always hear about Japanese replacement engines- is there a preferred place to buy from (I’m in Wa state)? It’s a D16Y7, - I know others could be swapped but I’m looking to make it go easily and on a modest budget. Also wanting it as a fuel sipping commuter car.
Any other advice on this project you can add I’d love to hear.
Thanks in advance - Greg

Looks like the pic didn’t work for me.. oh well I’ll figure that out and you most likely know what it looks like anyway.
Thanks- that’s pretty much what I thought too. I can probably buy an entire engine for the price of getting all the smalls that are missing and don’t know what’s wrong with this one.
Anyone recommend their favorite replacement engine dealer?

Craigslist or Facebook classifieds are usually overpriced.
Honestly find a junkyard around you that will warranty a used engine. Around me I've seen civics crushed with the blocks still in them because there is such low demand from the market. (Not alot of people out there driving or taking care of these cars anymore)

Found a yard in town that has one they want $350 for. They’re going to do a compression check on it, but said it’ll be several days- in the meantime I think I’ll look around for a parts car. If I can find a wreck for about the same price it’ll probably work better. Some genius took every fuse and relay out of the box and the lid is mia, along with a few other bits.
Do non Vtec engines get better mileage? I assume with the increased hp vtec would do worse but then the way they work it may not make a difference

A good-running Y7 will yield MPGs in the high 30's. I personally get between 35 and 36, but I'm running 205 series tires and I'm not what you would call a "hyper-miler"; I wind it out to keep up with traffic. Stock steelies, or even HX wheels, will yield better results.
Thanks Farva, err I mean Literacola- that’ll work for me. My commute is 2 stop signs with 30 miles of freeway between them so I should be able to get a pretty good average. Wish I had my 92 vx still.. brother in laws roommate stole it one night and totaled it. Best tank I got with that car was 60.
