My first Honda, a genuine HF, and as the saying goes, looks bad, runs good. Want to keep it that way so a timing belt is the first orde of business. I am finding a variety of prices from $10 to $60 and would appreciate any input on choices. Watched a quick video, looks straightforward but any tips also welcome; I have done timing belts on VWs, Fords, and such.
Note the goats in the pic. They will not be helping.
Welcome to the Honda family, cool to see your first is a Crx. What are your plans for it?
I'd recommend a normal gates timing belt, they're a very well known brand for timing belts. They make 'racing' timing belts that are pretty pricey (and blue) but a normal timing belt from them is probably around $30.
Thanks! The previous owner used the car as a daily/beater, but I hae a bit mor erespect for the old girl. My last project was a 1988 Golf GTI 16V:
As you see, I made such radical mods as smoked turns and tails and color-coded wipers and spoiler. Most of the work went on under the skin, replacing perished rubber and bringing it back to mechanically new with a few tweaks.
With the HF I will be doing similar restoration. So far I have aired up the flat spare and Rain-Xed the windscreen. All suggestions welcome!
Eric The Car Guy has some good vids on timing belt replacements for Hondas if you want specific info. He is well versed on Honda/Acura. GOAT CURRY FOR ME PLEASE!!
Hate to say it, but I had one on my 91 auto DX. Absolutely hated it since the seals dried up and it would not stop leaking. Angry 16 year old me got pissed and punched it off of its hinges and siliconed it shut, and I junked the car a year later for my 90 Si. Good luck with it. It will let sunlight in when you don't want it since they don't have a shade.
Thanks all for the replies. Curried goat and goat stew for everyone!
Sorry for the delay in posting. As a newbie I guess my posts have to be moderated; a couple have not showed up and then my internet went wonky all day.
Here's a poser. Working with the multimeter today, I confirmed the previous owners assertion that the alternator only charges when the cabin ventilation fan is running on the #3 speed. WIth the fan in the off, 1 or 2 position, I show only battery voltage at the battery terminals. When I move the fan switch to the 3 position, 14.1 volts. I was so shocked I didn't test on the 4 position. Any thoughts? (Besides always run the fan in the 3 position!)
