Questions before rebuild
This is the box i am curious about
ok so to start things off i am newish to Honda's, so if one of these questions is somewhat dumb im sorry.
I have a eg civic with a d15b7 and yes its the same ol things wrong with it smokes likes crazy 75psi of compression yada yada. anyways im rebuilding it stock, only modification to it MIGHT be the bore depends on how much of the wall they have to take off to smooth out the cylinder. My questions are-
1.The head has an aria where it is somewhat orange pealed and ground down as if it was starved for oil. anyways my plan is to take some emery cloth to it and smooth it out. good idea? or is there something else you guys would recomend.
2. What is that black box deal. looks kinda like a catch can or vacume canister i have no clue but is it important, can i do away with it/block it off?
Anyways guys check out the pics lmk what you think anything you guys recomend me doing while its apart?. Thanks in advance for all the help guys
Breather box for PCV vacuum system.
The cam journals look extremely worn. You will likely need to replace the head.
What's the condition of the camshaft journals and lobes? If similarly worn, camshaft would likely also need to be replaced.
You need to read the service manual, buy some plastigauge, and find some micrometers if you plan to rebuild.

ditch the head. That's beyond repair.
From the oil leak, it looks like you neglected to check oil levels. Even after a rebuild, I doubt it will last long.

Umm i neglected nothing lol i bought this car for 150 bucks a few weeks ago and it had a list of problems. and yes a massive oil leak was one of them. but i should have been a little more specific on my history with the car, my bad. So ditching the head and looking for another one.
Thanks for all the replies guys!
non-VTEC SOHC heads are rather cheap. You can pick a fresh rebuilt one for under $200 on Ebay. A few weeks ago, I made a mistake by "assuming" the used D16y8 head was in good shape. Drove an hour to meet up and buy from the lowlife ******. My time as well as $40 was a waste. Ended up ordering one from eBay (that was delivered yesterday).
Here's one for you, if you want to keep it non-VTEC. I bought mine from this seller and shipment was quick and easy. Yeah, you can send in your messed up cylinder head as core, shipping prepaid by them.

The reason your idea is not wise is the area you are speaking about are integrated bearings. Your emery cloth may smooth it out but it will be, beyond spec and not function properly possibly allowing for severe damage to happen in the head. The only "fix" that could be done is a line bore/hone to a new camshaft that is ground to be oversize or find someone who can make and machine in replaceable cam bearings. This last is so rare that you will pay way more for the bearings themselves than you will on a rebuilt head. Either way, fixing the head is not cost effective at all.
I hope this additional information gives you further insight and understanding as to why you have been given the suggestions you have. Please excuse the members whom assume the damage was caused by you, and thank you for clarifying the car history.
All the best to you.
