Transmission Shot? Shifter locked up now stuck in gear
Morning everyone,
I was able to get my exhaust patched and engine mounted correctly.
Started working with my car again a few days ago and yesterday my shifter was feeling strange. Hard to shift into gear unless at the exact rpms kind of feeling then it would be fine. Well I was reversing out of a driveway after a delivery and got stuck in the middle of the road. Couldn't shift into 1st gear. Some good Samaritans helped push me to a side street.
I checked my clutch pedal...it was loose (something previous owner had messed with). I tightened it a bit and I was able to get it into gears. 1st,2nd,...reverse. So before driving it again I put it in reverse and was going to go backward and forward etc. While reversing car slammed stop like I put it in a forward gear. Shifter locked up again.
Got a tow home. I can drive it forward...feels like its in 2nd or 3rd gear. Shifter is loose again but the top linkage on the transmission feels locked in place. Not sure how it's suppose to feel haven't messed with it before.
With the car off it "feels" like I am shifting through all the gears.
With the car on and clutch pedal depressed I also feel like I am shifting (sometimes not 5th or reverse), however, I cannot actually change gear. It will only go forwards and sometimes it feels like reverse locks in but the forward gears still locked so it won't move until reverse pops out.
If I put the shifter into neutral and lift my foot off the clutch pedal it's still in gear.
Am I looking at transmission rebuild? Or is this possibly something I can fix without removing the transmission? Tow truck guy said it could be the shifting bushings/synchros?
Re: Transmission Shot? Shifter locked up now stuck in gear
Looks like its stuck in 5th gear. Any other gear will cause it to lock up and stall. There's an excessive amount of oil/fluid on the bottom of the transmission.
Also should the axle be sticking out slightly like this?

Oh fun.. yeah I pretty much figured that. I think it lost too much oil and froze (my guess).
How hard / expensive is it to do a rebuild for something like this? Probably wouldn't know until I pulled it right?
Really tempted to drop the transmission now, but throwing it on craigslist to see if anyone wants it as is first. I don't think I can afford to fix it. I'll probably run out of money and just have a bigger problem.
Re: Transmission Shot? Shifter locked up now stuck in gear
Your best bet would be just to swap in a replacement transmission. Rebuilding a trans is a big job and a lot more than most DIYers can handle themselves. That's assuming the transmission is even able to be rebuilt. With the axle sticking out like that you could be looking at differential damage or any number of things.
Usually you can find a replacement transmission on Craigslist for cheap. If not check your local junkyards. Looks like you have a 94-97 by looking at the pictures. Any 90-02 Accord 5 speed will work except for the "H2A5" transmission. 92-96 and 97-01 Prelude(Base only) transmissions will also work. Gear ratio information is readily available online so you can check the ratios on whatever transmission your search turns up. It would be a good time to replace the clutch and rear main seal as well. Good luck.

Thanks. I started looking but not much locally for me here. I'll have to call around the junkyards but the one I was using didn't have any with 5-speeds.
I misspoke about doing a rebuild. I was hoping I could possibly open this transmission and find an obvious issue and just replace one part. Need to fix it on a shoestring budget or abandon it all together.
The cost of a replacement transmission (even a cheap one) will probably be too much and it'll make more sense to junk/sell the car. Too many things on the list of problems with this car.
For research sake, what would cause the gear to lock up? I wasn't using 5th gear at all at that point, but I was going into reverse when it happened. Could it be a broken shift fork? Or possibly when I tried forcing it into gear something fell off and lodged somewhere? Just want to know what to look for if I do end up pulling it apart.
Re: Transmission Shot? Shifter locked up now stuck in gear
I was being stubborn and didn't want to put a penny into it after everything last couple of weeks. I had someone coming for it tomorrow for a couple hundred. Figured I'd just try to add oil.
Voila. After a few minutes shifting through gears. 5th gear popped out.
When my engine mount bracket broke it must have pulled the CV Axle out enough to drain the oil completely (or enough to mess it up). I was losing so much oil from my cracked oil pan I didn't notice the leak. Seems like the CV axle won't stay in so might need to be replaced. I'm still going to sell it..but at least now I can get a two or three hundred more
Lesson to learn...check the oil before shopping for new transmission or calling junk yard.

Wow. Honda is an amazing car company. They had the gumption to design a transmission that will prevent you from doing undue damage in the event that it loses all lubrication by preventing disengagement from 5th gear.... thereby rendering the car inoperable until you add oil, then it disengages and works beautifully!...... you may think I’m being sarcastic, but I once drove my 89 civic sedan with a dry transmission for months before I figured out it had no oil in it.....the only thing it would do is after driving in high rpms, it would begin to whine, and the shifter would get stiff......I bet a Toyota trans would’ve just shredded itself if it ran without oil.

I gotta say I'm definitely impressed considering it's a 26 year old transmission.
I drove it around and it feels better than it has in weeks so now I know the warning signs at least.
