97 Accord Wagon won't stay running
Disclaimer the wagon has over 320,000 miles. Grandparents bought it new, all maint and services in accordance to the manuels were done at Honda up until last year when I got it. I drove it to work for about year and about a month ago it sat in the hot parking lot at work like normal and wouldn't crank when i got off. It would crank/run/die all simultaneous. Went back after it had cooled off it cranked fine and I went and filled it up thinking maybe my fuel guage was off(it only took $5 to top it off). Drove it home no issues. Next afternoon went outside and it would run until the motor got hot and then killed off. Let it sit 5 minutes same thing runs till motor gets warm and kills off. I did some forum surfing and changed the main relay ($50 and controls fuel regulation?) it worked flawlessly for 2 weeks and then died on me while driving. I am lost guys and gals, out of curiosity I changed the fuel filter and soldered some bad looking tips on my old relay but nothing is working. I'm no mechanic please advise
When it died did the gauges also die or was the engine the only thing that conked out?
If the gauges also went out, then you may want to check the ignition switch. These can wear out at the contacts and the plastic housing can crack which will cause the housing to spread apart and breaking the electrical contacts. When cold the plastic is contracted, when hot it expands and the tolerances open up. I had my own ignition switch fail as one of the four plastic tabs holding it together broke causing the switch to open up and lose contact.
Being a '97 use a OBDII scanner capable of monitoring sensors. Watch distributor/ignition pickup sensors. If the ones on the crank get dirty(320Kmiles) they can lose resolution. Also thermal failure would cause an open, when cold or when driving air is cooled, when sitting the air heats and cooks the sensor.
