Default Lightening a Stock Flywheel.

I was just wondering if anyone has lightened a stock flywheel from a 92-95 SI. And how pounds or what's the most that can be taken off. I'm staying all motor SOHC if that helps any. Any info would be helpful..

Don't take it lighter than 14lbs.

Most who have done this felt more comfortable buying an aftermarket made that light.

I believe that they are right around 18 lbs. Does anybody know where you can take a flywheel to have this done? Local auto parts store, machine shop? I have heard that it has to be balanced also, is this true?

Good info, and the price doesn't seem too bad.

What about a Type R fly? I think they are 14 or 15 lbs. to start. Can they safely go to 12 lbs.?

i heard about someone doing this and it shatter, and tore his legs up as the flywheel shatter and flew into the car, i'm not sure how light he did, but that thought is just a bit scary....

Honda or a domestic? Wouldn't a shattered Honda fly get the passenger before it got the driver? I thought RWD's had scatter shields to prtect againt this kind of thing.

Default somebody help me!

My local machine shop said they could lighten my OE flywheel but they need to know exactly where to remove material. My guess is to grind down the outer lip till it is gone, then start shaving the larger ring of metal under it (as indicated by the arrows below). Can somebody enlighten me; is this correct?

BTW measure the min. thickness on stock flywheel, add .200" and maintain it when milling.

It reall help that a old VW Bug guy handled my flywheel.

There are two types of flywheels for Honda CiViCs - steel and aluminum. The O.E. flywheel is steel. It's MUCH heavier than need be, and the reasons are quite simple. First, the extra weight makes shifting easier, and it smooths power transitions during acceleration/deceleration, e.g. offers better driveability. Second, steel is cheaper than aluminum, so Honda doesn't care how much it weighs. This applies to other parts too, like wheels, et cetera.

Shaving the surface of a stock steel flywheel is an old money-saving trick, but this is generally a poor choice. Like all engine and transmission components, the flywheel is a precision part, albeit heavy. Simply shaving surface material will only serve to weaken the flywheel. Because it already takes a beating buffering the force generated by the engine, weakening a flywheel can only result in failure.

It's your life; do what you want, but, this is the wrong place to skrimp IMHO...

look at the casting marks, you can see where the cutting started.
