Default Idle Problem

Recently acquired a 1997 Ex Coupe with a D16y7 non vtec . It has a Vtec ecu in it as well. My question is: what could be the problem if the car idles well over 4K when clutch is engaged or in neutral. Is it the vtec ecu, iacv, tps etc etc?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It is drive able. It does have a check engine light on. Stock as far as I know. Not sure what codes will be pulled I will have go check. And I’m not sure if it’s been converted or not. I don’t have a lot of info on the car as I got it less than 24 hours ago.

if you can post a picture of the engine bay you may be able to get some feedback on what's stock and what's not. (should be down-draft throttle body, no VTEC solenoid on the head, cast exhaust manifold w/integrated cat-converter, ect.) if the idle control is on the throttle body it probably has 3 wires. simple as finding it and counting the wires.

codes can be pulled quickly with a paperclip if you don't have a code reader. always start with the codes. they'll help narrow things down so you don't waste time on areas that are likely OK.

maybe so, but the stored codes should indicate that. if there's no TPS code, it'd be a wasted effort to check.

Likely it is a hose not connected. Also make sure the throttle cable is slack when no one pressing the gas. The only way the engine can run that fast is if excess air can get into it.
