Default Leak coming from fuel pump?

Hey guys I've got a 95 Del Sol S with a gas leak. I've dropped the fuel tank expecting to see a rust leak on the top side of the tank, only to see fuel leaking from the fuel pump. I pulled out the pump and I noticed the rubber gasket separating from the underside of the pump where some rust has formed.

How can it leak from the top of the tank when the pump isn't running? It's been sitting for over a day and it was still constantly dripping from the top, I'm worried if I replace the gasket or pump that I'm missing some other kind of leak.

Also, I'm looking at pump replacements, and I'm seeing a lot of universal canister-looking pumps. Has anyone tried them? I don't understand how they fit.

are you sure the gasket wasn't pinched? Had that before and you can smell gasoline inside the car
