Default remove screen in steering wheel?

Has anyone removed the screen or mesh at the bottom of the steering wheel? It's right where I would want to grab it a put a finger through to hold but the stupid screen is there. I could just cut it out but might end up with a lot of sharp edges. Does it push out? Come apart? (I'll post this in the Fit forum too because it's the same steering wheel.)

A 2011 CR-Z, but they used the same steering wheel on other years, and either the same or at least ones with this same mesh piece on similar years of Fit. Not sure what difference it makes. Anyone who has a steering wheel with that same silly mesh blocking the bottom grip, and who has done something about it, could answer the question.

Disassemble the wheel and remove the piece? It is probably there to keep fingers out of the small hole that could entrap and break fingers in an accident or hitting a pot hole.
