Default main relay or starter

Hi guys, sometimes my car won;t start. As in won't turn over.
It's usually after a 30 or more mile trip. When it's warm outside

Fuel pump primes and I hear the clicks, clutch switch works. clicks when i press the pedal

ignition cylinder seems to work as well, clicks in every position.

main relay was replaced, but this was more than 5 years ago.

Was told it's likely the starter or starter solenoid.

Is this just one unit in my car? D16a6.

How hard is it to change?

Oh, and it'll start after eventually many tries.

Try another main relay .

And make sure your battery terminals are tight.

ignition key cylinder is also another common culprit .spray some wd40 in it .

Could likely be the starter relay. Possibly ignition switch.

Easy way to test.... jump a wire straight from the blk/wht wire on the ignition switch to the starter signal terminal. This bypasses the starter relay and clutch interlock switch. If it works, then you either have a bad relay or a weak connection somewhere in that circuit.

The starter signal terminal draws a lot of current when it is hot. I found this out because I originally had some 16ga wire running to it and it would do the same thing when hot. Upgraded to 10ga wire and haven't had a problem since.

Starter going bad is another possibility.

Tapping on the starter when trying to turn over works similar to tapping the fuel tank to shake the fuel pump?

So... I remembered I have a kill switch on my starter wire from my days in college.

I bypassed it and so far the problem has not re-occured,

I had a kill switch on the starter signal wire for a while too, it definitely made the problem worse. It was one of those cheap Autozone switches which probably had very little contact.

Now I wire up everything to the starter signal to handle a 30amp draw and it's good.
