Y7 cam gear timing question.
Hey y’all thanks for all the help over the years. I come to ask for what i think is hopefully the last bit of info I need. To wrap up my mpfi conversion. My last question hopefully is about the timing and the y7 cam gear. Here it goes. Do I line up the timing marks according the original cam gear them remove the original and replace it with the y7? Or do I line up the timing marks on the y7 cam gear with the surface on the cylinder head? Option two completely disregards the original cam gear.
Line up the 2 cam gears via the key way, you'll see that the teeth will be off half a tooth. Make new marks on the Y7 cam gear using the old [PM3] style cam gear marks for reference.
That’s sounds like I can go with my option A* what do you think? You suggesting I line of the cam gears and make a new mark on the y7 gear correct?
Before we go any further, can you elaborate on what you're doing? What exactly are you trying to accomplilsh? Which head/block/camshaft combo? ECU?

Thanks "jlicrx" for answering, glad you're still on here holding things down.
And "89ED" that's the exact reason why I needed you to clarify before the thread went any further. Hope everything else is smooth sailing from here.

Sorry to drag this on. Let’s clear it up though for the next guy. Im doing a multi point swap on a stock d15b2 with stock d15b2 head and cam. With a d16a6 pm6 ecu and the correct distributor idk the part #. Now that it is running on a 1.6L multi point fuel system and Ignition timing? Should I use the timing mark on the cam gear that are there for the 1.6L?
If you're trying to set ignition timing, you'd be looking at the crank pulley not the cam gear. There should be different notches on the crank pulley, one for TDC and another set (of 3 I believe) for ignition timing purposes.

Never a straight answer. Do you work for nasa?
damn really so there’s no need to make sure the cam gear is set at any point?! Just the crank pully amazing thanks so much this should be hella helpful for future readers.

The cam gear marks are for setting "mechanical" timing of the camshaft relative to the crankshaft. "Ignition" timing is set via the additional marks on the crank pulley, they are the 3 marks before the TDC mark (hence why timing is set at X degrees BTDC ("Before TDC"). A lot of people that are new to this don't distinguish that "mechanical" timing is separate from "ignition" timing.
I believe my answers have been as straight forward as they possibly can. I don't work for NASA but I do mechanical design work for a living.
Your right about the the difference between mechanical and ignition timing. I never considered the difference. I’m sorry I’m just another less knowledgeable enthusiast frustrated by my own lack of knowledge.
Again thanks for educating me but I still don’t feel I’ve received a definitive answer as to what marks on an original d15b2 cam gear I should use to set the mechanical* timing when converting to a multi point fuel system from the original dual point system. The curiosity comes from having to use a 1.6 liter distributor and Ecu to make everything work and there being mechanical* timing marks for both 1.5 and 1.6 on the same cam gear. Just so that it’s clear I do know how to set tdc on the crank pully and have aligned it with the single mark on the crank pully to the two marks on the timing belt cover. My motor is stock d15b2 head block and cam+ multi point system using pm6 ecu. To date I’ve never came across a mpfi write up that has brought to light my specific question. Curse me for overthinking everything
