Looking for good platform to start weekend AutoX project <$3k
The wife and I have decided to find a new project car to turn into a weekend track car, mainly for AutoX. Wanting to get into something fairly cheap, like $1-2k range so that we can build it together.
Wondering what some good platforms are to start with. Thinking late 80’s to early 90’s Hondas, but also find interesting some of the RWD imports of that generation.
A lot of people run eg’s and crx, but also see quite a few Preludes turned into track cars. Also Integras. What are the pro’s and con’s of each? Is it worth looking at another make to get rwd even though we know nothing about them? I’d be willing to learn, just not sure what to look for.

Auto-X and full size road courses pose very different demands on cars. I would look at the results of the latest solo nationals and see what people are running in the stock-ish classes. Some of the choices made by winning drivers may surprise you (e.g. 1st gen CRX, 2n gen MR2, etc).
My recommendation is to search around in the $2018 classifieds on the Grassroots Motorsports forums and see what turns up. You occasionally find some very interesting and very well prepared cars there for under $2018.

Thanks for mentioning the GRM forums, they have a great classifieds section
Interesting you mention 1g crx and 2g MR2’s. I’ve had my eye on an ‘85 and ‘87 crx and also an ‘89 mr2 that is super clean. Miatas are attractive for this of course but people seem to want way too much for them.

Considering an Integra, just because the aftermarket support is so vast.

Another thing to worth asking is what class do you plan to run in? If you want to run anything from Honda that's modified beyond just 200 treadwear tires and a sway bar, you're going to be severely out classed until you spend some serious bucks. Honda's are fantastic little cars, but they're not very competitive in autocross save for the ITR and S2000 in stock classes and early civic/cr-x models in highly modified classes.

I am more than likely picking up a ‘90 civic hatch. I will be running it more for fun than for competition, so class is not a huge concern. And it will be heavily modified.
