Default 1993 Civic No crank, but will occasionally start

I have a 1993 Honda Civic Hatchback with a b18b1 integra motor and every so often the car will not crank. I will just hear a click and that is it. The fuel pump does prime when I turn the key. I have tested the battery as well. I can push start it with no problem. I have checked fuses, which they all seem fine. If I am able to start the car 99% of the time it will start again. Does anyone know what could be causing this?

I have tried to search as well with no luck.

Sounds like the starter is on it's way out or the connections may be loose. During the times it won't start tap on the starter's housing with the handle (butt) end of hammer or other object then try to start it.

Thanks for the reply, I'm going to test this out tomorrow, and hopefully get a result.

Agree with starter assessment.

I tested the starter and it was ok, nothing wrong with it. Does anyone else have any idea?

Bad solder in the ignition pigtail OR a "near" failure of the clutch switch pad in which case in a few more days or weeks, it won't work occasionally... it won't work at all.

How did you test the starter?
To test it properly it needs to be removed and load tested.

I took it to autozone and had them test it.

What is the clutch switch pad?

^ It's this kindof a thing ... fairly common problem for many 90s Hondas: https://honda-tech.com/forums/acura-...90-gs-3114878/

Google for pics of what the thing looks like. Yeah, Honda f'd up here.

Is that for like the neutral safety switch, because the previous owner bypassed it and now you can start the car without pushing in the clutch. Which I still push in the clutch because of habit, but I don't have to push it in.

Where all the connections tight to the starter when you removed it? My guess is the starter's sollenoid contact are in the early stages of failure and why it's an intermittent issue.

The other day, I just cleaned the contacts for all the wiring from the battery to the starter to make new grounds to see if that would make a difference, to no change.

Just because it works at one point doesn't mean the starter is fine. The starter contacts inside eventually wear thin and they will sometimes touch and sometimes not touch when they have worn too thin.

The next time it doesn't crank, open the hood and hit the starter. If it cranks then the starter needs new contacts.

I did that before I had the starter tested and I tried starting it while my friend hit it and it made no difference, it still never tried to start just the clicking sound.

Let's say it is my starter solenoid. Someone sent a link on a repair kit for it previously, is it pretty easy to do, because that seems pretty cheap, and I will take any cheap options right now lol.

Worth a try to DIY.
If it doesn't work pick one up at a local junkyard or here: Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market
