what is the purpose of dimpling the axel nut

Default what is the purpose of dimpling the axel nut

long story short I was in a time crunch needed to swap my passenger axel out took it to pepboys, fast forward a month later leaving work heard something as I was rolling to a light sounded like my heat shield was hitting my prop shaft it wasn't it seemed to be the rotor heat shield hitting the rotor there were hit marks from the ball joint on the heat shield

it keeps the nut from backing off, but if torqued to spec it shouldnt back off anyhow

ok ok thank you wanted to make sure there wasn’t a key way in there and worry about it may have fell out
