Default Easy Alternator Question

Idle will sometimes drop to 12.2v, load the alternator will go from 13.8-14.0

Is it time for a new alternator? If so what's a good brand one? This one was an AutoZone one.

Headlights were getting so dim (nice LED ones) so i bought a cigarette lighter voltage indicator to aid in diagnosing

If it bothers you, try a new one. A cheap fix would be to clean your grounds, it might help. Cigarette lighter voltage meters aren't super accurate either, BTW, they usually read about 0.2-0.4 low.

I have the same issue, post an update if you don't mind if you end up solving it.

Using my cigarette lighter voltage meter, my power is all over the place, often 11.9 at idle, 13.9 at most during driving, and occasionally drops to 11.9 while driving. I know my alternator is to blame, but I have had zero issues starting or running my lights/subs other than the headlights dimming slightly. I'm not saying it's a good idea, but I've been running it like this for months with no issues... So your problem is probably not as serious as you might think.

Yeah, I've been running it for a couple weeks now. I'm not too worried because the last time my alternator failed my headlights started to flicker as well as my interior dome lights so I think that might be a better warning sign.

Just keep an eye on it and have a replacement or the cash for one set aside. Might also check you ELD... should be changed every few years

when not loaded, Honda alternators will usually charge in low output mode to save gas, which is 12.60 .....until you go over 45mph or when you add some load it will charge in full output which is around 14.6ish

Have a multimeter? You can check the entire charging system easily.

If you decide to replace the alternator, I strongly encourage avoiding re-manufactured or off brand parts, as their quality is often hit or miss. LKQ has a well stocked and frequently updated online directory; I was able to source a low mileage OEM alternator for 60 dollars shipped.

Didn't expect lots of replies.

This is as serious as I think it is. My headlights get so dim, I CANNOT see at times.

Interesting update, using the cig lighter meter, if I leave the AC or heat on, it goes right back to 13.4v, and I tested my headlights out, and I've never seen them so bright before. I know I have an issue.

I'm suspecting a ground now, just ordered some 4GA cable, and I plan on directly grounding my alternator to my battery neg. Will post back in about a week when I try it.

I will source an OE alternator if the grounding isn't an issue and try that next

Well, you described the issue well so a lot of people are willing to help. My issue is similar, just headlights on it's kinda dim, but not to the point of not seeing... turning on fogs or AC will kick the voltage up instantly for me too. If you can't see, take action lol. Let me know what fixes it

I do have a multimeter, what's the easiest way to test the charging system with a multimeter?

Also, where do I attach the ground to the alternator? I see a nut that looks like it would be it, it do I attach it to the bracket it's on?

Did you have an issue with the halogen headlight bulbs dimming before installing the LED ones? LED draw less current.

EricTheCarGuy has a great step by step video on troubleshooting your charging system:

I'll continue to update this with a fix if I ever get there.

Just watched the video on testing an alternativ, bad news is since I'm by myself, I can't take the multimeter and check voltages while revving the car. I need clamps or something at the least

Might just throw in a used alternator and cross my fingers..
