CV Axle replacement Dust Ring Issue
1991 civic ex all stock D16A6 sedan
I just installed new Cardone CV axles on both sides. The driver side axle seems to be binding the dust ring that protects the wheel bearing in the hub. I haven't driven it yet, but I tested it by spinning the wheel by hand. I can see the dust ring actually pressed onto the outer axle so that it spins along with the axle. Definitely don't want that. The passenger side works perfect as it should - I can see the axle spin inside the dust ring without any contact.
The Cardone axle included a little notice that says "For 1988-1991 Honda Civic and CRX, it is necessary to remove the dust shield from the replacement unit before installation. The larger seal of the replacement unit functions as a dust shield."
So I did in fact remove the dust shield from the Cardone axle to avoid this problem. But should I remove the stock Honda dust ring too? That is not how I understand the above notice. Also I hate it when a matching pair from the same company doesn't work the same.
Thanks, Anyone?

Thanks for the reply. I removed the "dust shield" from the new axle. It comes with a rubber coated metal ring on the knuckle side of the axle. The notice I quoted then says to remove it. Here's a pic.
Are you answering based on knowledge of the Cardone axles or just saying the Honda dust ring always needs to be removed? Its odd to me that the passenger side works fine leaving the dust ring in the knuckle.

It happens with aftermarket axles because they use the later Civic axles which are larger profile but otherwise fit on a EF, if you remove the metal ring.
This is not a guess. this is from seeing it many times with aftermarket axles .
Real OEM EF axles don't need to remove the ring. Raxles use real OEM joints, so they fit too .
I don't think that rubber piece matters. I don't think it helps either.

Yep that makes sense, appreciate your input Tyson! I just wish it was consistent because the passenger side axle worked no problem with the knuckle dust ring. So I guess I will just leave that one alone. I thought about going with Raxles, they sound really good, but I cheaped out on the price and went with Cardone since I used them before on a civic.
