Default Quaife quick steering rack in EM1 Si?

Hi all. I'm exploring quicker steering rack options for my EM1. I was wondering if the Quiafe Quick Steering Rack and Pinion works in an EM1, or could be made to work? I've tried to search for this and can't find much.

Thanks for any help

Why do you feel you need it?

Agreed. There's no reason to have an increased steering rack on the EM1. In fact, most Honda road racers go for that very rack to use in a variety of applications.

So there's no way to make it quicker? I wish it was closer to my S2000 steering. Going back and forth, the Si feels likes a boat.

SI Em1 uses same rack as a GS-R Integra.

But, go for it..

Are you sure? I thought Integra's were 3.2 LTL vs. Civics 3.6? With no difference in the Si p/s rack and non-Si p/s rack.

Yes, the Integra rack has a faster ratio. The specs are on the service manuals.

Glad to help! Sorry but unfortunately I do not know the answer to your question. I just remembered reading that post a while back and searched for it.

Pretty sure. I currently own both models (DC2 & EM1). From even turning on each track it was definitely a 3.2 in the SI.

I hope so. I was going to do that mod to my 99 Dx rack, but, if the Em1 is 3.2 I will just pull and swap mine over.

I also thought the Em1 rack was a little sluggish on track days, but, I'm coming from an S2000 as well.

Two different worlds, my friend. Coming from an S2K to an EM1 or even a DC2, the rack will always seem sluggish in comparison.

True dat. Anybody else care to chime in? I looked in my FSM last night and it states 3.6 for P/S and 4.1 for M/S, with no differentiation between models. However, the part numbers are different between my 99 Dx and 99 Si rack. I would test it out, but, my dash is out and steering column dropped.

I noticed that interesting inconsistency as well. Maybe the FSM is wrong... In that case I'm sorry for the bad information above.

So, I held the column and turned the wheel in the Si. Then, I marked the un-installed DX rack and turned by hand. While I could have made a mistake in this process. It does appear that the SI has a 3.2 LTL and the DX a 3.6 LTL. Interesting.

Not that surprising. The EM1 used a b-series engine and not a single cam like the others. They based about 70% of the EM1 on the Integra GS-R, and TYPE R when it came to the engine bay. I'm surprised how people didn't use SI parts when swapping in that engine than anything else, really.

Even the master cylinder is from a Type R, and not an EJ8

Only two reasons for a quicker rack.
-heavier steering which gives you more feedback
-quicker counter steering

You want either of those?

Or not wanting to go hand over hand / shuffle steer on tight corners. For tight autocross configurations, rack speed is handy.

So is a different sized-steering wheel.

I guess. Maybe if you're compensating for not having your alignment set up correctly.

Fastest way around the course is to steer as little as possible. Try some toe-out (front and rear) and tighten up the bushings. Then there's spring rates and sway bars to think about, If you have that right, then you'll understand the counter steering comment, even with a slow rack.

Just wanted to update. I have both my Dx and Si rack broken down a good bit. With both racks locked all the way to the left, there are 2 less teeth on the Si rack shaft than the Dx. I suppose one could do the Integra pinion swap on an Si rack and net a sub 3 LTL ratio.

Integra GSR pinion, per that linked thread. Also S2k uses an electric steering rack vs. hydraulic in civics.
