Default H22a4 Anyone know where this part goes?

Took apart an h22 and a buddy wanted to know where this part comes from. Anyone got a general idea? Cylinder head or block?

Found out it's a balance shaft retainer. I'm certain this goes into the block.

Yes, it is the front balance shaft retaining clip. It is installed on the engine block under the oil pump between the block and the retaining ring of the front balance shaft.

There is no way of installing this back in without taking off the girdle and crank correct?

The crankshaft and main girdle can stay in place... you will have to remove the oil pan, pick up and oil pump from the front of the block in order to install the piece.

I'm trying to remember on my car without going back in, doesn't this thing just bolt up to the oil pump on the outside ? You can't just pull the two bolts and it comes right off without taking off the oil pump ? I feel like that's the way it was on my h22a but perhaps the a4 is different.

Nope. The front balance shaft seal is on the oil pump housing... the shaft retaining bracket goes inside. You must remove the oil pump assembly to access the location for this retaining bracket.

Could this be a reason for bouncing idling upon start up of a fresh built engine? Nvm probably just needs a tune
