New oil pump not fully machined?
Anyone else seen this? I'm rebuilding my F22B2 and my old oil pump was at the service limit for the housing-to-outer rotor radial clearance, so I decided to replace it with a new OEM unit from Honda. I had to stop my build today because the new oil pump wasn't machined completely - the o-ring recess for the oil galley that feeds the rear balance shaft gear case was not cut - it was in its "as-cast" state. I've contacted the dealership I bought the oil pump from in hopes they will exchange this. The pictures below show the old and new housings, with and without the o-ring. At first I thought I just REALLY had to cram the o-ring in there, but after a few seconds I realized there was no way it was going in the groove. Closer inspection shows no machining marks.
That is definitely not going to fit into that recess. So what did the dealership say? Did they replace the old O-ring with a new part number or are they going to replace your unit?
Dealership doesn't have another oil pump on-hand, so they are going to get one in this week and open it up before sending it to me. They are giving me an RMA for the one I have. Fingers crossed they find the new one is correct.
OK, so I'm kind of unhappy with the dealership's customer service, because all I got was an email saying they compared the oil pump I returned to another one they ordered, they were the same, and they refunded my money. I would have preferred a call so that I could talk to them and make sure they were looking at the same thing I was. I ended up just getting an aftermarket pump from AutoZone...same 1 year warranty as Honda and half the price...AND it came with all of the necessary o-rings and grooves machined properly. Finally, assembly continues....
Well, I finally got the car back together and cranked it for the first time last night. It fired right up, now for the break in period. Hope to get many more years of service out of this stock-ish rebuild.
I can't even imagine ever hearing of a new Honda part being defective. They always say a 1 year warranty against defects but I can't imagine ever hearing of it coming into play.
Good to hear about your build.
