Gen 1 CRv - can i use RTV silicone as a sump gasket replacement?
On a Gen 1 CRv can I use RTV silicone as a sump gasket replacement, ie no sump gasket just use Permatex rtv silicone to refit the sump?
The sump gasket is hellishly expensive locally $50 and I've seen some vehicles where even the factory will spec rtv as a suitable replacement for the sump gasket.

The silicone spreads out both internally and externally and does not react well with the additives in the oil ….. You risk some of the silicone blocking up the oil galleries within the engine leading engine frailer.
I remember with Toyota's I've had the Toyota dealer stopped carrying the sump gasket on some models because the factory rather specc'd RTV as the offical factory replacement, it must be safe if you do it correctly.
If you slap it on like peanut butter then yes but careful application of the RTV is from all accounts fine, Honda even specs RTV to be applied with the sump gasket so they are't worried about it being used.
