Default Newbie with some Exhaust Questions

OK Im new to the Honda world but I know my **** when it comes to cars. I got a 95' GSR with 123k miles on it on Fri. The car was perfect on the test drive drove great and everything. The car has some things done to it, some of which are not my taste. For example, the previous owner has some rainbow fugly headlights, at night they made the ground look green and purple not to mention you cant see **** with them. So I got some PIAA super whites and its all better now! Also, this guy has gotten the Greddy SP axle back. Now I know Greddy doesnt make axle backs, but this guy just had that section of the exhaust. Now this thing is loud as ****, way to loud for me. Ive talk to a few buddies and they say that they have never heard the SP be so loud before. He said that its usually one of the quietest. Is he right? this leads into some other stuff so here we go ....

Sat. morning I went to my brothers soccer game. On the way home I started noticing a rattle. It sounds like a heat shield, but it also could be the cat. I got a wooden baseball bat and had my Dad rev the engine for me to make the rattle. I tried using the bat on the heat sheild to see if I could find which one was rattleing. I could not find where it was coming from. If sounds like its coming from right where the cat is. I tried banging on the cat (engine was off) trying to see if I could get it to rattle, but it wouldn't. Im thinking that if this is my cat, that could be why my exhaust is loud. If it is my cat, Im thinking of getting a high flow one. what a good high flow cat for a GSR? I am 100% for sure going to replace the exhaust because its way to loud for me. I would like the get the quietest cat back there is that still provides good HP gains. I got my PIAA lights from a local performance shop and was talking to the owner. I asked him about cat backs for the GSR that are quiet and he recommended the Apexi WS exhaust, and also said that Thermal had a new one that was pretty quiet. Still looking into which one to get. Any recommendations? Oh and whats stock exhaust size? What is the WS pipe size? Apexi site doesnt say. I think thats all, hope you guys can help.

Regards

Everyone seems to have their own opinions as to what is 'quiet' and what isn't , but I have head quite a few say that they prefer something like 2.25" piping, ES or Dynomax muffler, maybe a resonator / glasspack.. something like that , sounds stock at idle, looks stock, and nice sounds at WOT.

And From my experience, usually exhaust rattling like that is the/a heatshield.

I personally have stock cat, 2.25" crush bent piping, and a straight through design muffler. It was inexpensive, and I'm happy with the setup.

Good Luck!

Diregard what you just read .... if you put a glasspack on a honda you should shoot yourself. You want quiet, look into locating a old school RS*R, be prepared to pay out your *** for it, but its one of the most saught after honda exhausts, and it sounds great. Try to avoid crush bent piping too if you can...its not bad, but its not "Good" either

Dont get me wrong I want to be able to hear this exhaust, but this one is just over the top for me. I dont want a stock sounding exhaust either. Im looking for something that has a nice deep tone, nothing raspy or sounds like I have a hole in my muffler or anything like that. Roght now its hard to hold a conversation in the car because the exhaust is that loud. I mean my girl friend knows when Im home because she can hear me coming from down the street. Are you starting to understand how loud this is now? As I said I want something with a nice deep tone, nothing to loud at cruzing speeds, and a nice good sound at WOT.

I dont really want to build my own exhaust, but I guess its always an option. Ill look into it, but I would rather buy a nice mandrel bend cat back system.

Well, PERSONALLY, i just dont' think it's worth the money.. ussually cat back setups are around $500, when you can get a crush bent setup for like 200 - 300, saves a hundred bucks, and unless your going full out RACE , I dont' see the need for it.

Damn, sorry dude, i understand that the people that have that don' t have a quiet exhaust. It's just an OPTION. No shooting should be permitted.

Anyone with idea on my rattle??

After more research I think the Apexi WS, sounds like the way I want to go. Unless anyone knows a way I can get a RS*R.

Oh and if anyone wants those rainbow shitty headlights let me know you can have them!!! Dont know why you would want them but if you do there yours.

GReddy mufflers are notorious for having the muffler packing material blow out. That could be why it's getting loud. I suggest getting a custom 2.25" exhaust made using an ITR muffler. If you want a quiet, stealthy system that'll make power, get that.

I second that, this is a good setup, and it doesnt look all "fast n the furious"

Should I just go to a muffler shop and get it done with crush bends?

I would really like to have a mandrel bent system. Most companies around me charge an furtune for their mandrel bending. It will cost me about the same in the end since the Apexi WS is a pretty inexpensive cat back.

Where can I get a ITR muffler, and howmuch do they usually cost??

I have a good hookup with http://www.turboevo.com and get anything they sell. So Ill pickup that Apexi WS for cheap. Im new so I dont have a name for myself, but Ive been selling parts to my buddies in the 300ZX world for a while and can privide some references for anyone who is interested in seeing if I can save you some money.

Sorry for the Selfless plug!

yah .. that's a pic of my exhuast that i took w/ Dennis's digi camera (B2finity).

The exhuast is very nice .. fits well, looks good. The sound is quiet so you won't be hasseled by cops. Some ppl. may prefer to spray paint the muffler black w/ a high-heat resistant spray paint (more incognito) Overall, Good Stuff

*only problem that i have had occur w/ the exhuast was that the piping rubs against my rear sway (skunk2 21mm). The piping is 2.25. It's hard for exhaust manufactuers to anticipate this. My problem can mostlikely be easily resolved by bending the hangers a little, wrapping a high-heat resistant cloth (header wrap?) around that section it rubs, or replace the skunk2 w/ maybe the Beaks ITR quick swap.

hope that helped, IM me if you have any other questions
