Would an Easy Mig 140 be a good welder for exhaust work such as cutting and rewelding/welding in mufflers? I'm a novice but have access to this welder.

 

Yes, it will work.

But it really depends on the type of materials the mufflers/exhaust piping are.

 

It will probably be aluminized steel piping with magnaflow mufflers

Well you'll want to run 309L wire and trimix gas if you're welding SS mufflers to steel exhaust piping. Basically any stainless to carbon.

Other than that you can just run er70 and regular ole argon/co2 mix if it's just steel to steel.

Also learn to tig weld if you want to charge more

309L is stainless wire. It's used to weld stainless to carbon(mild/black steel)

You can't weld stainless with regular er70 (mild steel) wire. Well, you can, but it is definitely going to rust and crack.

Honestly, unless you are doing welding for a living, the basic sub $400 MIGs are just fine.

There isn't much to a generic 110v MIG . . . sometimes you get some QC issues from them being made overseas but they can be fixed most of the time.

I still have my northern tool 110v MIG I bought years ago (4-5?) and it still runs like a champ. It's a great welder for some guy who needs a little crappy muffler on and you don't have the time or ability to throw the car on a lift. I just did some high school looking kid's e36 he wanted the rear muffler at the bumper chopped off of and straight pipe welded in. Didn't have the space in the shop at the time so rolled the northern welder out, sawzall the muffler off, fit up the pieces of straight he got from autozone, and 30 minutes and $40 later he was on his way.

 

Ive had this same welder for years. This little welder is great and can do alot for its size. For exhaust its perfect, B heat and about 2 feed wire speed works good. Mild steel sucks never use that stuff. Itll be rusted and broken in a year. Aluminized is better and can last. Obviously stainless is the way to go. You can get very good results which will last years with just basic flux cored wire no gas needed.
