I have a 01 honda civic 5 sp 4 cyl. The problem is that its stuck in 3rd gear... When the car is off its able to shift to 1st,2nd n so on its not the tranny but the weird thing is its still stuck in 3rd no matter what gear u think ur in ... I need help just to pin point the problem could it be a pin that connects the shifter n the gears, solenoid , tranny , i dont know im stuck please help ....

 

It is likely that the transmission is damaged internally. If you can turn the car off, and select 1st gear with the shifter, then re-start the car and release the clutch and it is in 3rd gear... it is definitely inside the transmission.

 

I thank you for your reply by the way my name is lani , can you please tell me if that's why there was smoke n like a burning of something metal that's the best way I can explain it, I wasn't the one driving the car at the time but I did notice that it would always pop out of 5th gear ?... So basically my friend , I ma gonna need a tranny right?

 

try checking the linkage and make sure nothing came loose

have someone shift while you look it over

 

check clutch plates also.

 

Popping out of gear is a bad sign. Low fluid or burned parts from exposure to low fluid levels is bad. A popped out axle could make a metal scraping/grinding noise, but so could damaged bearings inside of the transmission from low fluid. You should be able to see the shift arms move on top of the transmission. If they do, you will have to pull the trans to inspect the damage.
