well, i am satisfied with this good old remedy. i got it for $5 from Bob-DC2 (thanks!) and i installed it today. it still retains a small whistle reminiscent of the AEM, and the sound isn't too much different (although a bit louder in the top end), but it pulls more once you get past VTEC, and the throttle response seems better (although i don't know why, i'm still using stock airbox / filter). Looks 100% stock under the hood. If you have the bumper lens and fender liner in place, there is almost zero indication of anything not stock. I don't get any whistle, though, it's only slightly deeper and louder under WOT. Here's my engine bay w/ DIY icebox mod.

I'm using the RU-2820, no way would I pay $80 for a stupid filter.
As for hp gains, I really don't know. I had the DIY icebox w/ the stock paper filter for awhile, and got the K&N mainly because it can be reused.
My car has almost 126K miles on it now, for those who asked.

ermmmm, sorry if this is a retarded question, but does it just attatch to the bottom of the stock airbox?
and how much does it cost?

I sell a pre-assemble ready-to-install DIY "Icebox" for $30 shipped. You can go to http://www.geocities.com/bretq/icetake_cai.html for further information.

ok so i finally got a full day of driving in with it today and i must say... i am satisfied! the throttle response is DEFINITELY better than an AEM CAI, and slightly (but noticably) better than stock. it does make a deeper noise and you can hear it when VTEC kicks in, much better than stock albeit not as much (of course) as the AEM CAI. for some reason today it made me feel like driving fast and punching the throttle all the time; and i am a pretty damn conservative driver.

Thanks for the feedback. I would have to agree that the throttle response is definitely improved. Also, power in the low-to-mid rpm range is also greatly improved.
why is throttle response and power better than AEM? Do you guys have any dynos to prove this?
i.e. (do the straw test, suck thru a normal straw, cut it in half, suck thru it again)
Hey dLo...u shad an AEM CAI on your car before, right, and you did the dyno with it. I know this is too much to ask but you should dyno your ride with this DIY Icebox so we can compare...
I'm pretty curious - I'll throw in a $1.00 for your dyno time....

it would be better to compare 1/4 times...
u'll prolly get higher numbers with the aem cai,
but that doesnt really mean anything----
the "cold air" short ram should be a lot better...
making equal power (when cold air is being shot into the intake....from the car moving)
and with better throttle response
actually, 1/4 times are shady (cuz of launch)
so do like a 2nd gear pull from 3-8k with both intakes...
and time it accurately

i have a aem short ram right now. should this DIY intake give me a increase in power that i will be able to feel? will i have to remove my bumper to install this? how easy is the install?

throttle response really helps in the bay area mountains though
so i am satisfied with it
