93 manual transmission into 96?
As far as I know they are both F series engines. I know the 96 coupe with VTEC is going to be a F22B1 engine, not sure what came in the 93 wagon, either a F18A or F20A depending on the trim level. Try and get the engine code off the 93 wagon block, it should be stamped into the block on the front near the exhaust manifold where the head and block meet, right near where the trans bellhousing meets the block. Chances are the 93 Accord wagon trans will bolt onto your 96 Accord coupe block but I think as far as the mounts go for the trans-to-body etc. things are going to be different. it's of course possible just depends on what you have for money and resources.

Thanks Mad Mike. So do you think it would match up with the body mounts? I can't imagine Honda changing the body mounts if everything else is the same. Like Accordian47 said, I just need to get the code and compare them.
I believe the only difference is the transmission mount. If you get the correct mount that came with the transmission, it should drop right into place. If you tried to use your 96 mount on the 93 transmission, you'd find it wouldn't bolt up.

So 1996accordlx, if I'm pulling the transmission right off a '93 and mounting it into the '96, all I would need to do is use the mounting brackets from the '93 and it should match up with the bolts holes on the '96 body? Sorry if I'm using the wrong terms. This project would push my wrenching limits but I think I can pull it off. I just don't want to get 90% of the way finished and discover it's the last 10% that was way over my head.
Might want to double check axle fitment too (length, splines etc.) I forgot to mention that, I also totally forgot that Accords were grouped by the 90-97 year range, I was thinking 90-93 and 94-97. Oh and "vtec" is the variable valve timing system found on Hondas and Acuras, vtech is a home phone manufacturer, just fyi.
AngrSmileyFace, I did read through the auto to manual thread so I have an idea of what's going on but I'm swapping manual for manual. I just want to make sure the transmissions are compatible without major modifications.
This has become more complicated than it needs to be.
The transmission cases are the same in 90-97 Accords and 92-96 Preludes. Its the same housing the same case.
The differences will be;
Internally, the gear ratios, which has nothing to do with physically fitting.
Externally, any brackets, mounts, bolted to the case to fit model and year specific differences will need to be transferred over to the 'new' transmission.
Putting a '93 trans in a '96 car just requires all the '96 brackets/mounts/sensors/whatever that are on the '96 trans be placed onto the '93 trans.

MAD MIKE Does it again, lol, I see this guy killin it everywhere on here. Anyway, I agree completely. '93 F series trans in a '96 F series car means use:
*Only thing I'm unsure of is the rear mount bracket, ya know the black steel bracket that mounts the engine to the rear mount, it is also supposed to mount to the transmission as well, right on the differential area of the left, intermediate shaft side of the trans. If the cases of the trans are literally the same between '93 and '96 then you should be good but if you run into bolt alignment problems, you may need a '93 rear mount bracket (like $30 used).
Go ahead and tackle it man, you'll get it. Your bound to run into a couple hurdles but those will come when they do and like I said, at worst you'll need to buy a inexpensive used part.
- '96 Trans Mount
- '96 Axles and Intermediate Shaft
- '96 VSS

So thanks for all the advice and guidance. I found a transmission from a ‘97 and installed it over the weekend and guess what? 4th gear grinds at high rpms. I guess the guy I bought it from forgot about that issue.
Anyway, any suggestions to help ease the grinding would be appreciated.
I seem to remember someone, perhaps Mad Mike stating that 90 through 02 manual teansmissions were the same.
Does anyone think a 2000 manual transmission would fit in a ‘96?
Thanks for the advice

there are numerous how-to's on youtube for d series which are very similar
Thanks holmesnmanny. The tranny I pulled out was having problems with 5th gear and someone told me it was the synchros on that one.
Maybe I’ll give fixing that one a shot. When it’s griniding, is it always the synchros?

when it gets to the point of grinding then not only are the synchros bad but usually the dog teeth of the gear itself are bad so you gotta replace the gear as well
