Possible to Split Transmission in-car?
My '01 HX 5 speed has an issue with the reverse gear selector fork, when turning right in 2nd gear. I always thought it was a CV axle until I rebuilt my transmission and replaced my CV axles (still had the sound afterwards) and found this post.

I've got a spare reverse shift fork that is working properly and I want to know if I can leave my transmission bolted to the engine, while I split open the case and replace only the reverse shift fork.
Seeing as how when the case is open, the fork is very easy to access and is very easy to replace. I could probably get by with only splitting it a few inches apart too, as long as the rear main shaft bearing stays in place.
It seems entirely possible to me, but just curious if anyone has either had this problem and fixed it, or split the transmission case like this for any other reason.
Thanks!
This is the transmission I rebuilt - and how i want to disassemble it while it is still in the car

That seems harder to do than to pull the transmission. Plus, how are you going to reseal it with hondabond? That sounds like a total PITA to put on and get the case back on.
If I left it in the car I would only have to pull out 1 CV axle, instead of both axles, rear engine mount, subframe, exhaust, etc. So I think if it's possible it would be much much easier. And I've already pulled the transmission out of this car twice in one month, so I'm trying to not do it again.
To reseal it, I'd be smearing RTV/hondabond onto the surfaces with my finger probably
that's more or less what I did when it was on the bench and I resealed it.
