I pulled apart my engine cylinder head to pull the valves and such and get the head resurfaced for head gasket replacement. So I read that TDC on the engine block is when the piston on cylinder 1 is all the way up correct? Now I pulled my camshaft and do I just face the arrow up when I reassemble everything, would this be TDC? This is first time I pulled apart a cylinder head before. I did mark the cam gear with the timing belt when I pulled it, but it wasn't TDC. Can someone please explain how this works?

 

I don't think that's how the Porsche boxter motor works.... But I could be wrong.

Good deal, Piston 1 would be at the top, but also you can check the crank gear. It has a mark on it that will line up with the arrow on the block for TDC.

Then for the head, you have the cam gear "up" sitting at the top and the left and right hash marks on the cam gear will be level with the top of the head. The head is then in TDC position.

What do you mean? You only have the water pump which is a symmetrical unit so any position is the same as the next and the tensioner pulley.

TDC only has to do with setting mechanical timing for the timing belt.

First focus on getting the head on and timing belt.

After that is done, you can study the distributor and the tangs, they are slightly off set and you will want to match them up to the tang holes on the cam shaft. It can be put on 180* out but not easily because of the offset. Lets not let you do that by advising you should inspect it closely to observe the offset.

It's best to not have the distributor connected to the head when doing a head install. You deal with that part after you get done with the timing belt.
