Hi,
my car is a 96 Accord with 210 miles. When I inherited it the water pump had puked. I took my time and replaced the water pump and timing belt. I also cleaned many things under the hood and fixed many miscellaneous other things. I ordered all Honda OEM everything and really took my time. I had it up on jack stands for over 4 weeks working on it over weekends as best I could. I log hours during the day and don't have a garage to work in so I worked mostly just over the weekend. So all that is to say it sat up on jack stands for over 4 weeks. When I got it back together, and cranked it the ABS motor/pump made a quick burping noise and then quit but it popped the ABS light on the instrument cluster. I put the car up for the night. Today after work I removed the ABS relay thinking I would somehow test it by swapping it with another relay that was the same. I found none so I reinstalled it. Then I went to hook up my OBD II sensor to read the codes. When I put my key in to check the codes there were none. Also, the ABS light was no longer on. I turned the key and it started right up. I took it for a test drive and got it warmed up. All seemed well. I pulled back into my driveway and checked as much as I could while it idled. There were no lights on and all seemed to be okay to me. So I shut it off and then tried to restart it almost immediately. When I did, I got the ABS burping again and then the ABS light came on. It started right up but that darn ABS light came on and stayed on.

Can someone please help me? I would be very appreciative if someone can help me with what to check/fix/replace next.

when the light comes on it's really important to pull the code before turning off the ignition just in case you make the code go away

 

ABS system on the 94-97s always self primes on initial startup.
Find out what the code is. Either through the OBDII port behind the ash tray, or use the two wire blue connector under the glovebox door. Jumper the connector, turn the key to II(ON) and count the blinks.

 

I'm just gonna throw this out there. This is the mother of all abs fixes if it turns out to be the abs motor that's bad.

I pulled the code. It gives me a 1 pause, 8 code so I guess that is a 1-8 or an 18.

I read on some other internet site that it was a high pressure fault. In my repair of the watere pump and timing belt, it is entirely possible that I might have disconnected something (temperarily) and got some air in the line.

I am thinking I should bleed the modulator. Can someone more experienced please confirm this? Does the 1-8 mean something else?

If bleeding the brakes is the way to go, can someone recommend a link to a procedure?

The accumulator o'ring is leaking. I went through this on my 97 when I had it.

 

The reservoir over the modulator appears to be low. Can't I just fill it? Wouldn't that solve the problem? If so can someone recommend a procedure for filling it?
