2002 Honda Civic Si ECU Question
Hello,
I need some help identifying what engine ECU's would be compatible with my Civic. I went to the local stealership to ask them but of course the dealers will not release any information because they want you to bring the car to them $$$. My car is a 2002 Honda Civic Si with the D17A2 VTEC engine with an automatic transmission. My engine ECU fried after my alternator failed and now I am trying to find a used replacement somehow. I've been searching for the same ECU number that my current ECU has which is 37820-PLR-L54. Does anyone know what other ECU's would be compatible with this part number? I am able to find 37820-PLR-L55, 56, 57, 58, 59 etc... but the question is will they work as long as they were taken out of a car with an A/T transmission that was also VTEC. I am aware that you require the same key immobilizer that matches that ECU or that you will need reprogram for your key immobilizer. Any help with this would be awesome! Thanks in advance to whoever responds

Well I'm sure you're right that it is the Canada-specific model with the D17A2 engine with an automatic transmission. Can you help me out with finding a compatible ECU part # for this Model?

That's important to know when it comes to the ECM part numbers and other components you're trying to gain access to when finishing your project. People spend THOUSANDS of "mistaken" dollars because they didn't truly know what they had, before they started buying parts. This is why places like O'Reilly's and other part stores can be vague, and even "pissy", because they have a database with thousands of cars. The person at the counter doesn't know most of them, and will leave it up to the customer to know what they have.
Many Canadian cars have MPH as their standard use w/ KMH on the underside because there is still an agreement of sales of used units between U.S./Canada as long as the NHTSA standards are the same for both countries. So, it having MPH doesn't mean it's automatically a U.S. model car. It means it could have been originally sold in Canada, then resold to the U.S. when someone from Canada moved there.
These are just some golden nuggets to have as you look/inquire about more components /issues regarding this vehicle.
As for your ECM issue. That means you have to go by the 2002 Civic EX A/T as your designated Make/model to search for anything. The ECM for the A/T transmission is either going to be 37820-PLR-L57 or 37820-PLR-A51 (2001 model).
Getting the exact last 3 digits aren't the most important, but it does help to determine if it was a manual or A/T transmission. You can make A/T transmission-based ECMs work in Manual cars, but not the other way around.
There's an entire database to find these used in Boneyards across the U.S.. Or you can buy at the deaership, but it A) may not be available any longer B) Horribly expensive to the point where the boneyard search is just easier.
Here's the database to find used units in Boneyards in the U.S. I can't attest to their accuracy, so if you find a hit, go ahead and directly call the location to see if its there..

Sure, but basically you have to remember, that you can't search for this part unless you have the right Engine/Chassis/Trim level. So, although you may have thought that the 2002 Civic SI was an Automatic w/ a D17 VTEC engine, a quick Wiki-search would have shown the photo of the chassis, the engine that came with it, and the important fact that it was manual transmission. It would have also stated that the EX in the US, is the "SI" in Canada.

Is it possible someone put some Si badges on a regular civic, I have a 2002 Civic SiR not Si and I"m in Canada and car was orginally sold here. It has the 2 litre V-Tech engine with the 5 speed popping out of the dash and a hatchback, I don't believe they sold the Si/SiR in any other trim in 2002 either in Canada or the U.S. Not hard to tell if it's the V-tech, says right on the engine when you open the hood and there is a V-tech solenoid sitting close to the oil filter all which should be located at the back of the engine along with the exhaust manifold. The other posters are quite right be sure of what you have before you start buying parts.

The SI That year only came in one trim as a hatch and can't be mistaken. I doubt if you had badges switched out. But a photo of the entire car would confirm this.
