Default Engine running hot & A/C problems

Hello just a few problems I need some help on,
first I have a 2005 honda civic value. Lately it's been getting hot on idle, fans are not responding as they should. They come on intermittently, so far thermostat & coolant temp sensor have been changed it seemed to work for a week and then it got hot again and this time almost over hear. I checked the fan to see if it worked hooked it up directly to the battery with a alligator clip and it works fine. I'm leaning twds possibly the cooling fan switch.. am I going in the right direction?

secondly, I've also got a A/C problem going on, I go to turn on the a/c and the condenser fan doesnt come on and there is no cold air coming through until I've been driving for sometime. It blows air but it's not cold, then when it finally starts working and kicks on it works well until I come to a stop and it shuts off... I don't even know where to begin with this problem.

ugh please help! Thank you in advance

First thing you check are your fuses and relays...although that sounds like it could be a break in the wire. get yourself a copy of a honda civic 2005 service manual and take it from there.

All fuses are good, bought new ones and changed them out anyways, and I switched relays with ones alike and they all work.

How many miles are on the vehicle, and can you confirm what type of coolant has been used and how often its been changed?

Its very common for these D17's to blow headgaskets: https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-...e-etc-2889523/

50/50 long life full strength Peak coolant. A little over 140k and I actually changed it 3 weeks ago. After i put in the new Thermostat

Sadly, the particulates in the Honda brand coolant does not work well with aftermarket options. A lot of times, you'll see sludge build up in the heatercores as a result of the two coolants mixing in the system. This can easily cause system pressure issues, and with the already pre-existing shortcomings of the stock headgasket design... you may have inadvertently had a coolant mixture issue. When you drained the coolant that was in there and pulled the thermostat, did you by chance flush the system with water before adding in the new coolant?

what does that mean? Lol

BTW a block test was done and there was no problems. Had an oil change yesterday and everything was good, coolant level has remained the same through this entire problem.

unfortunately I did not flush the system, do you have directions as to how you do that? Cause I could change it again, tmw I'm going to put in the new Thermo Switch that I picked up, I have to drain coolant for that anyways

Here's a good tutorial on that process: DIY: Engine Coolant Flush - 7th Gen Honda Forum - The #1 Community for 2001-2005 Honda Civic Enthusiasts

Also, sadly, block tests aren't 100% conclusive on the headgasket failing. However, not burning off any coolant is a good sign. Maybe you just have an air pocket trapped in there. Getting the D17 to burp properly can prove to be a pain in the rump.

Thank you for the tutorial! (: I have a feeling I might have a lot of air pockets.. Since the thermostat change I drove to Vegas, over heated due to the fan had the fan hooked up to the battery made it to Vegas they put in a new Coolant sensor but idk if they bled the system. Drove back from Vegas sat in 41 mins of traffic stop and go had NO overheating problems at all, fans were responding properly the entire 3hr drive. Then a week later I'm at an idle on a red light engine gets hot about 2 notches above middle. Normal temp is about a notch below middle. So I'm wondering if they didn't bleed the system in Vegas? Idk it's such a puzzle. Today it got hot 3x at idle. Most it's ever happened.

Exactly which parts are you replacing and are you doing what you should be doing and buying only Honda cooling system sensors ?

Also, are both fans running ?

both fans work, however they only work intermittently sometimes they come on some times they dont. Lately the cooling fan haven't responded when engine gets hot. And the parts are bought from Autozone, thermostat was replaced, Coolant sensor was replaced and now I'll be replacing the Cooling fan switch located on Thermostat housing. I've also replaced Fuses and switched around relays.

the fans aren't running correctly so you replaced everything but the fan switch so far ?

the original engine coolant temp sensor will normally outlast the vehicle

buy the fan switch only from Honda and count on that aftermarket thermostat going bad before you get 50k out of it and pray you catch it in time before your car overheats

One of your fans is for the A/C system, and doesn't run unless the A/C is on.
