Hello, I have a 2000 honda CRV with a crankshaft seal leak. I managed to remove the pulley bolt and crankshaft pulley. However, in order to get to the crank seal, the timing belt pulley also needs to come off. The repair manual just says it slides off. I attempted to use a 3 jaw puller but all it did was break one of the teeth off. I have applied heavy duty penetrant, Fluid Film(O'Reilly's), to try to loosen the pulley and will give it it another try.

Would appreciate any help/suggestions especially if there could be a better penetrant I could try.

 

Did you take off the belt, first?

It should just slide right off, sans belt of course.

 

Yes, the belt, harmonic balancer, all the belts are off. It's just the crankshaft sprocket that holds the timing belt I am trying to remove to get to the camshaft seal.

I used a 2 jaw puller just now and broke off one of the teeth. There appears to be a key that is deep inside a slit of the pulley that holds the sprocket to the crank. Since I have already broken several teeth off the sprocket, the crank sensor will no longer work. I am thinking about drilling the key out since I have to get a new sprocket pulley anyway to get to the crank seal. It may take a few drill bits since it appears the sprocket pulley is very hard. It appears just using lubricant will work here but it will help once the key is out.

 

Ahh, you didn't take out the key...yeah that's going to need to be removed. Sounds like it's sheared at some point in it's life and is now stuck inside the keyway.

 

Getting all my drills ready and will start drilling above the key today/tomorrow. May need to lift the car higher so I can get comfortable and drill in a kneeling position. Maybe I can rest my elbows on something. Hopefully I won't drill into the engine or crank. Wish me luck!

 

FInally got the crankshaft timing sprocket off. Had to pound a center punch into the drilled hole then pull on the center punch and wiggle it out. I think the lubricant sitting in there for a week helped. Had to purchase a new sprocket
