Ive tried searching but I cant find any threads with information on this specific tool:

It is the Schley 68600A


I know most people use a c-clamp style tool to press the joint into knuckle as this avoids damage to the new joint. The youtube video certainly makes the procedure look like butter with the air hammer relative to my experience with an autozone press.

Has anyone ever used this air hammer attachment to press in the new joint? If so, did it damage the new joint in any way?

Im going to be replacing the lower ball joints on my 2000 GSR soon and I'd like to make it as painless as possible.

 

My mechanic tells me he loves that tool.

 

i can see the appeal if the installation always goes so easily.

but i dont see why not the C-clamp. the only things that ever gone wrong is the spacer wasnt long enough and i crushed the threaded stud. just needed to pay attention better next time.

Pretty sweet tool. If I had to do the LBJs on the regular or was planning to buy a tool to have, I'd definitely invest in one. Being that I do a set maybe every two-three years at this point, I'll stick to getting the C-clamp style one for free from Autozone whenever I need it.

 

well, not everyone has a compressor or air hammer. c clamp works.

 

that's depressing.

I once used my air hammer to open a letter. I use it for everything.

 

So, Update:

I bought this tool. My feelings on it are mixed. The old ball joint came out in 30 seconds of hammering. The attachment they included in the kit definitely made getting the old one out as painless as it possibly could be.

The drama happened when I tried to install the new ball joint.

Well, actually, there was no drama. Nothing happened. I hammered on the top of the ball joint for 45 minutes and it never went any farther than 1/3 of the way in.

I ended up having to use the tried and true C-clamp press rented from advance auto.
