Default what would cause the rpm and temp gauge to spike at the same time and go back down

1997 toyota camry
driving 60 car started losing power, then the rpm and temp gauge spiked and came back down and car shut off??

Sounds like a squirrelly electrical problem. My first guess is the actual ignition switch. The symptoms sounds little bit like the car turned off and then back on again. It might also be a ground wire problem. The insulation on a wire has worn off and it momentarily touched ground at that spot. I would check the battery too. A battery that is getting low can cause lots of weird problems in cars, I'm told, by mechanics I watch online like Scotty Kilmer. Or, go ask Scotty Kilmer on his website On The Road With Scotty That's what I would do. He is a Toyota expert. BTW - you're in a Honda forum so you might actually get better help on a Camry forum if you want to go that route.
