Throttle response slower after K&N FIPK CAI!?
Hey guys, I have a completely stock '98 VTiR (GSR). It is in great nick with full Honda service history, very fresh engine, great throttle response and plenty of pull. I was going to do a bunch of stuff to it but decided it's pretty damn good as is - hard to improve upon the Honda engineering.
However, I have read only good things about the K&N FIPK CAI:

...so I thought I would make that one mod to my car. I just had it professionally installed along with full service and computer tune today and I was excited to drive it but...I nearly rolled back into the car behind me exiting the mechanics - it took significantly more throttle before the car started rolling forward than before, with the same amount of clutch.
The same thing happens once the clutch is disengaged and you are driving, but it is less noticeable. You need to depress the pedal more than before to pick up speed. However, once you have depressed the throttle further, it seems to go well. The engine sound is better, and when you hit the VTEC crossover...you can really hear the exact moment of crossover and it really roars! It FEELS like it is slightly quicker in VTEC range but that could be the great sound getting me all worked up over nothing.
So, is this something I should have expected - a trade off for the extra little bit up top? All the K&N FIPK reviews say that it IMPROVES throttle response though, so I am a bit baffled. Does anyone else have this CAI, or an idea of why this might be occurring? Thanks!

Yup you sacrificed your mid for a lil more top. Try a short ram intake to get back some low and mid range. If its a daily id go with a short ram intake unless you like reving it up to enjoy that vtec and top end usually after 5500 rpm to 8k
Thanks for the info mate. I'm OK with the trade-off for now (lots of fun!) - and I still have the stock box if I want to go back anytime. What surprised me though was requiring more throttle to get the car rolling from stationary - I didn't think an intake would affect that, but then I don't have much mechanical knowledge!
That is weird. I experienced the exact opposite with aem short ram vs aem full length cold air intake. The cold air intake seems stronger in the idle-5000 range and the short ram seemed stronger in the 5000- redline range.
