I just bought my 2002 Honda Accord 2.3L and she runs great most of the time but shuts off at random like it's not getting the fuel it needs, I've replaced plugs, wires, coil, icm, fuel pump. I'm at a loss. I want my baby back any new ideas are appreciated. I love this car and I don't know where to go from here. Thanks

 

Is the check engine light on, or does it come on when the engine dies? If it does have you tried retrieving the OBD codes from the ECU?

If it does not come on you could look at troubleshooting the main relay. These relays have been known to have cold solders on the circuit board. The cracked solder joints can cause intermittent failures.

Nest time you have a no start issue, check to see if you can hear the fuel pump prime when you turn the ignition to the II position. The pump should prime for a few seconds, if it doesn't then there is an issue with the main relay, fuel pump or wiring.

 

I have the same car. I suggest watching Scotty Kilmer's YouTube video "Fixing a car that randomly dies while driving" . I can't hear the fuel pump in mine even though it is working fine so you may have to put the rear seats down and remove the cover over the spare tire area, which is also where the fuel pump is mounted. Of course you said it is dying while you're driving so it probably will sound fine when you do hear it, or the car won't start. As GhostAccord suggested, these cars are legendary for a main relay problem and there are lots of Youtube videos on troubleshooting and fixing that. For future reference check out Schrodinger's Box Youtube videos if you want a real education on troubleshooting and check out the FASTTEC method and his other videos, which are committed to teaching you enough that you avoid changing any parts until you know for a fact which part is bad.

 

Do you have a lot of items/charms/keys on your key chain? Remove the excess weight. It could be that the ignition switch is worn out and needs replacement. You can try to see if it is the switch by jiggling your key while the engine is on, if the engine stumbles or cuts out then you may have found your problem. Switch is ~$30 from Rockauto.

 

The only check engine codes I get is for a seatbelt that sometimes wont lock and an egr valve, which I replaced. Not sure where to go from here. Also found out the motor in the car is not the same year as the car, not sure what difference that would make if any, but I learned that when I couldn't find the fuel pressure regulator I needed. The one on the car screws in the one from the auto parts store bolts on.

 

You can buy a subscription to www.alldatadiy.com for about $30 and get all of the dealer-level information on your exact car. Scotty Kilmer uses that data service and he recommends it. These cars are legendary for failure of the main relay (PGM FI relay to be precise). If it was me I would pull it and test it to see if it is still working, or go to a junkyard and pull one and replace mine and see if that fixed it. Most junkyards, in addition to being cheap, offer 30 day warranties on the parts, so you can bring it back if it doesn't fix it. Also, before doing any electrical work, always disconnect the battery.
