Default Replacing the airbag wheel with an aftermarket unit

There are plenty of threads on how to do this, I'm just wanting to get the general concensus on if it's a safe thing to do. I always wear my seat belt that's not a concern. I googled and found everything from they are death traps and will kill you to they will save your life. I'm not scared of it by any means I just wanna get y'all opinions on it. It's a 98 coupe with 297k miles I've had forever. It's no longer my daily driver and I'm just starting to start to go through and freshen everything up. While I'm posting this, what's good options for steering wheels? Thanks guys!
