Default Ended up with two extra screws after re-installing D15B7 timing covers

HI,

I replace Camshaft and crankshaft seals and belts on my 1994 honda civic D15B7 engine. After re-installing all that I took apart, I ended up with 2 of the screws that hold the timing covers. These have threads on the lower shaft of the bolt and smooth barrel on the upper portion of the bolt. I took off the bracket holding the power steering belt so I could get a pretty good look at the lower timing cover thinking I missed two bolt holes. I can't seem to find any other screw holes. On the attached diagram from hondapartsnow.com, the parts information for the timing covers states 8 bolts needed. It shows 3 bolt holes on the left side of the cover, but my lower cover looks like it only has two bolt holes on the left side, 1 at the top and one on the lower right side, for a total of 4 bolts on the lower timing cover.

There are two bolts on the upper timing cover.

My question is, am I missing two bolt holes in which I just can't see them with the lower cover installed and the belts in the way? or do these two bolts belong somewhere else? The only thing i haven't yet installed is the plastic protective cover that sits under the front bumper. I don't think it goes to that part.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I also pulled apart thermostat housing, and fuel injectors, but I'm pretty sure these bolts don't belong in these areas. I have had my car apart for many months, and didn't mark this bag thinking it would only take days to put all back together. Ugh, life got in the way.

Kind regards for future replies.

The lower outer timing cover has 4 bolts in it. I don't remember off hand but I think the lower inner part of the cover may have 3 bolts in it but you probably didn't remover that part.

Then the upper outer cover has 2 bolts as well as the back upper cover has 2 bolts holding it.

So that would be 8 bolts in total to take off both outer covers and the top inner cover.

Okay I lied, the lower cover bolts directly to the block, there is no "inner" lower cover.

So 8 bolts in total, 4 bottom cover, 2 and 2 for the upper inner and outer cover.

The bottom two bolts in the lower cover can only be reached with the pulley off.

Ok, thanks for the suggestions and the diagram.

I do have the 6 bolts in the diagram installed, 2 for the upper cover, and the four on the lower. I only took off the bottom and top covers. I did not remove the back cover under the camshaft pulley. So, I have these two additional bolts left over after I had put it all back together.

Are there any other locations in the engine bay in which this car would have these two bolts?

That diagram was helpful. Thanks.

Those bolts are also used on the lower front bumper on the front of the car. But the two that hold the plastic bottom of the front bumper tend to be the rusty two bolts. At least they have always been the same bolts on the civics I've been pulling the front bumper from.

Ok, I will look up that bumper diagram and see if I can't locate those two bolts in the diagram. That would make sense as that is the only item I have yet to re-install, and I hope that is where these two bolts are housed. I will confirm this once I find the answer. Thanks!!!

The splash shield bolts are similar to the timing cover bolts, but not exactly the same. The flange head is actually larger in diameter than the timing cover bolts. What are the chances that you actually removed the pair of inner cover bolts and simply failed to re-install them ??? Removing the upper outer cover exposes the inner cover... and you can verify if the bolts are there. Make sure you place a drop of Loktite red on each bolt so that they don't accidentally loosen and fall down into the timing belt.

Hi,

These two bolts look exactly like the timing cover bolts. I took a picture of the two bolts and a picture of my the two installed bolts in the back shield timing cover, which I never removed.

I pulled out my front bumper splash shield and put it up and I had left the bolts in the car this whole time, and looking at the diagram of the splash shield, the bolts don't appear to look like the timing cover bolts.

Does anyone else have a suggestion or can pin point where these two bolts are housed?

Ok, the pictures uploaded this time.

Thanks
