Default Which is Preferred For A B20VTEC Build: Skunk2 Pro1 or the Tuner 2?

B16 block stock
supertech 85LB valve springs
gonna find itr header, worse case some ebay rep tri y
2.5 " exhaust rn but trying to find 3"

Skunk2 pro1 or tuner 2?
for DD, gonna be in mid rpm a lot (b16 tranny) so usually sees 3000-5000 rpm shifts, want a good scream from mid to 9k not something that makes power only 6k-9k rpms
idc about the ## i just want great mid range to 9k
block:
ycp 84.5 pistons
stock rods (if i can get eagles i will!)
arp rod bolts

will pro1 or tuner 2 or both will be good choice?
im still doing more googling
but not a lot of dyno's on Tuner2's
i can buy a "new" or low miles Sk2 Tuner 2 cams for $300 locally maybe i can get down to $280
or i can hold out and wait for a more used set of Pro1 for $350-400 shipped to my door

im really just wondering if i should just get the T2's for $300 vs buying pro1/pro2 for $350-400 shipped
is it worth spending the extra 100 for the pro1/pro2 keep in mind used vs new

IMO i like the midrange from the pro1 than tuner 2. pro2 will also work.

I made 220whp in my b20vtec with tuner 2's.. with that being said pro1 would be a better choice just depends on your budget and tune.

Tuner 2 gets my vote.

Or the Blox C would be superior to both IMO.

If you want those lobes worn out quick go pro 1 tuner 2 are very comparable and in certain setups make better power and are much less aggressive on your valve train! I know from experience, on a brand new never berfore used C5 head with Pro 1's it really dug into the cam lobes in no time at all with several lash adjustments which were not the case. Im now using Tuner 2 cams on a boosted setupe and are much better for daily/ less wear and tear on your rocker lobes.

I'm not going to get into the whole "rocker wear" issue, as I know Shodan and a few others who have used Pro series cams for years without issue. I personally think that it has more to do with maintenance than ramp angles, but that's an argument for another day.

I agree wunfstgsr, the Tuner 2 will make more peak power than the Pro 1 every time.

i have no experience with tuner 2 so i can only offer pro 1 info. have a setup 84x89, 10.5:1, portflow head, victor x intake 76mm tb, type r header, x98 fuel and made 222whp. But its a little peaky, but this setup is built for boost.

Agreed there's more variables to consider but from the inspection I did the vtec cam lobes on new Pro 1 cams had wear and the rocker tabs had significant worn marks and valve lash was in spec on each time checked. But Seems theres no wear marks yet on my tuner cams. I recently tuned my C5 engine on tuner 2 cams and made 314 whp on 12 psi on a centrifugal SC with cams at 0, these figures to me seem low but I will retune soon and dial in the cams as I aborted the dyno session cause of a bad ect sensor and map sensor failure issue (ebay map sensor smh)

Yep. Going on 8 years and no rocker pad wear. But I'll take torqueband over peak power any day of the week.

Is your compression ratio greater than or equal to 12:1? Run Pro2's.

I know you'll find this blasphemous, but what if he didn't want more power than what's used. It was between Pro1 & Tuner 2

GASP! Seriously though he wants mid RPM power, bigger primaries are the ticket. Tuner 2's work great on 1.8L but IMO leave a lot to be desired on a larger displacement motor. I'll be real though, the whole build is ****. Generic eBay or stock ITR header is never going to get him anywhere, and sticking with a 2.5" exhaust is further limiting. I'd skip the cams and get better supporting mods.

I can't argue with that, at all.. More supporting mods first

I didn't realize that 2.5" exhaust was a significant limiting factor for all motor making around 200whp...is this the case? I made right at 200whp with my 1.8l LSVTEC on 2.5" piping.

EDIT: actually it was 60mm piping, so 2.36". I don't want to get this thread off track, but would a header with a 3" collector be necessary when changing to 3" piping? Common sense would dictate that it would, but I've found that often the real-world physics negate things that I think were issues.

most ppl's exhaust will be a header with a 2.5" collector, no cat or "test pipe" and then 3" exhaust.

Header collectors should be 2.5"

Exhaust should be 3" if you can handle the noise.

I already said I'm going 3" once I find it
found 1320 header 4/1 2.5" opened up to 3" and flex. piping for $140 used.(I'd buy a real header but I read used rep is ok but needs flex pipe and support welds to fend vibration cracks) But great condition

looks like I'm going skink2 pro1 and not tuner 2's
since you guys are saying skunk2 pro1 has great mid range correct guys?

im finally moving this along!
block will be sent to machine shop within next 3 weeks
thanks guys

im using itr 84.5 spec
i did zeal calculator in going to be 11.5:1-12:1 give or take
again specs:
stock ports b16 head
blox skunk2 pro 1 cams
supertech 85lb

b20b block
84.5 itr style ycp Pistons (zeal calculator shoes 11.5-12:1 with my current setup)
arp rod bolts stock rods
i don't wanna go pro2bc I feel I may be not be maximizing the pro2

Look forward to seeing the dyno results. YCP, stock rods/arp bolts, and blox pro 1 is a great budget build. Just remember to not over look fuel (rdx inj and walbro 255?) also maybe I missed it what intake setup?

pro2s can also work man. theyve even worked well with 11:5-12:1 1.8L setups.
