The latch on the gas door is broken and I am looking for a way to fix it

 

the questions on these forums keep getting worse and worse, just when you think 'rock bottom' someone like this comes along

what about it is broken? won't open, won't close, the tang of the latch is missing, the striker on the gas door is bent?
