TD-42 Dizzy

My dizzy has started to squeak and i blame it on a failing bearing from what seems to be an Autozone part. I believe the P081 head came off a D16Z6 which used a TD-42U distributor stock. Although from my reading it seems many dizzys will work. I want to browse scrap yards for something close, as all i need is the base of the dizzy my coil, cap, ex. is fine so the more options i have the better. So i ask the Honda Tech gurus, what will work with my application?

The only one that bolts up is the D16Z6/D15Z1 distributor. However everything inside, including the plate with the bearing is the same on any '92 - '95 Civic. For the matter you can buy just the bearing at an industrial bearing supplier, I've done that before, they're kind of an oddball bearing, made by Nachi, but you can get them.

Thank you, that confirms those are the only 2 dizzys that share that bolt pattern. I was under the impression there where internal differences in the Vtec and Non Vtec dizzys for these years though. Note the link comparing the TD41U / TD42U there seems to be quite a bit of confusion on the subject.

Replacing just the bearing seems tempting, but with my current dizzy being an autozone special. I would rather just replace the whole base with an OEM unit. Im guessing the bearing is press fit, i have never dug that deep into a dizzy. Though theirs a first time for everything, as it seems i may resort to swapping around guts.

The D15Z1 (VX) distributor is a TD42U, it's exactly the same distributor as a D16Z6 or OBD1 JDM D15B Vtec (both Vtec and Vtec-e)

I'll see if I can get my hands on the Nachi part number again this week.

I remember seeing that thread before, but I don't ever remember having issues swapping the shaft/bearing assembly around.

Something I did forget to mention is the red headed stepchild, the DOHC ZC, the OBD1 variant uses an oddball distributor with one long mounting leg, it is timed differently (about 90° off)

Worst case you have to keep the existing shaft. The sensors are definitely all the same, I've swapped them tons of times. OBD2 are also the same in that regard, just with a different single connector vs two connectors, coils are all the same, igniters differ slightly but all function the same, in some cases you will need to grind locating tabs off the igniter mounting bracket to make an igniter fit, but the screw holes all line up. OBD1 and OBD2 B-series also use the same sensors, coil, and igniters as D-series. The same goes for the bearing.

The bearing is indeed a press fit.
